Evolve by Alexandra Popescu -York
1. Please introduce yourself and your brand.
I am Alexandra Popescu-York, a visual artist and fashion designer who believes in merging art and fashion to create pieces that transcend trends and tell meaningful stories. My creative journey began at the age of three when I started painting, and I have never stopped since. Over the years, I became a highly trained artist and designer, graduating from prestigious art and fashion academies that shaped my approach to creativity and craftsmanship.
For over a decade, I have been showcasing my collections through fashion shows worldwide and developing my brand as a blend of evolution, resilience, innovation, and tradition. Every garment is treated as a canvas, combining intricate handwork with cutting-edge techniques to reflect my vision: timeless, sophisticated, and deeply artistic.
2. What inspired you to start your fashion brand?
As an artist, I've always sought to bring my creations to life beyond traditional mediums. Fashion became a natural extension of my artistry, allowing me to translate emotions and ideas into wearable art. With my strong foundation in fine arts and fashion design, I wanted to offer something unique, pieces that empower, inspire, and connect with the soul of the wearer.
3. What is the concept of your brand/message to the audience?
My brand celebrates individuality and the fusion of art and fashion. It conveys the message that clothing can be more than functional. It can serve as a form of self-expression, a reflection of values, and a connection to beauty in its purest form. I aim to inspire confidence and elegance in those who wear my designs, blending artistic expression with everyday wearability.
4. What is the inspiration behind your new collection? What makes it special?
The name of my new collection is "Evolve". It is inspired by Earth's beauty and resilience, with a focus on the ocean as a symbol of life, depth, and transformation. The collection highlights the importance of preserving our planet while celebrating its breathtaking natural elements.
One piece in the collection is inspired by the sands, capturing the timeless warmth and softness of desert dunes and beach shores. Two pieces are inspired by the sky and the night, evoking the magic of stargazing and the calm serenity of moonlit evenings. Together, these designs tell a story of emotion, evolution, and connection to the natural world.
A standout piece is inspired by the sunrise and dawn, reflecting the tranquility of waking early to witness the first light of day or staying on the beach to experience the breathtaking beauty of a sunrise or sunset. These moments, deeply emotional and transformative, are woven into the collection.
What makes "Evolve" truly special is the blend of traditional and innovative techniques. I've introduced modern elements like 3D printing and resin, seamlessly integrated with intricate hand embroidery, a hallmark of couture garments. Additionally, I incorporated hand-dyed fabrics into some pieces, adding a personalized and artistic touch that further connects each garment to its natural inspiration. This fusion allows me to remain rooted in tradition while exploring new possibilities, pushing the boundaries of fashion as an art form.
I've always aspired to be an avant-garde designer, a couture designer who creates pieces that are both artistic and wearable. "Evolve" reflects this ambition by uniting artistry, craftsmanship, and sustainability in a way that feels both timeless and forward-thinking.
5. What advice could you give to those who want to start their own fashion brand?
Follow your passion relentlessly, but pair it with a clear vision and unwavering dedication. Fashion is as much about storytelling and emotion as it is about technical precision. Invest time in mastering your craft, and don't hesitate to innovate or take risks. Surround yourself with a strong, supportive team, and most importantly, stay authentic! Your unique perspective is your greatest strength.
Thank you once again for this opportunity to share my journey.
